If you only have time for one park, the choice usually comes down to the Maasai Mara or Amboseli. Both are spectacular — but they're very different.
The Maasai Mara
Best for: big cats, huge herds and the Great Migration.
The Mara is rolling grassland with scattered acacias — the classic safari landscape. It has some of Africa's highest densities of lions, plus cheetahs and leopards. From July to October, the Great Migration brings over a million wildebeest and zebra, and the dramatic Mara River crossings.
- Getting there: about 5–6 hours by road from Nairobi, or a short flight.
- Ideal stay: 3 days or more.
- Keep in mind: park fees are higher in the July–December high season.
Amboseli
Best for: elephants and views of Mount Kilimanjaro.
Amboseli is smaller and flatter, with swamps fed by Kilimanjaro's snowmelt. It's famous for its big, relaxed elephant herds, and on clear mornings the snow-capped peak rises right behind them — one of the best photographs in Africa. You'll also see zebra, wildebeest, giraffe, hippos and lots of birds.
- Getting there: about 4 hours by road from Nairobi.
- Ideal stay: 2–3 days.
- Keep in mind: Kilimanjaro is often hidden by cloud by mid-morning, so early starts pay off. Big cats are seen, but less reliably than in the Mara.

So which should you choose?
- Choose the Mara if seeing lions and cheetahs — or the migration — is top of your list.
- Choose Amboseli if you love elephants and photography, or have less time.
- Can't decide? With 5–7 days you can do both, often with Lake Nakuru or Tsavo in between.
